New streets, entry to Farmstead, more set for upcoming construction season
Whether you use a smartphone traffic app to avoid road construction, know that work is beginning.
Overland Park has several projects that include thoroughfares and neighborhood streets. Numerous projects are taking place this construction season, including asphalt overlay, minor sidewalk repair and curbs, new east entry to Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead, construction of a new clubhouse at Sykes-Lady Overland Park Golf Course, and more.
Overland Park’s budget is about $16 million annually for major street maintenance, sidewalk and curb repair and replacement. It also budgets approximately $24 million for street reconstruction.
Before any construction project begins, Overland Park will use social media, including Nextdoor, Facebook and Twitter, for significant projects that impact regular traffic. Notification, including letters and door hangers, is sent to residents when work involves neighborhood streets. The following projects are set to begin this year.
Neighborhood Street Reconstruction - 87th St. to 91st Terrace, Hadley east to Lowell. This includes full reconstruction of streets, curbs and sidewalks, new streetlights and stormwater improvements.
79th St., from Floyd west to Overland Park Drive.
This project includes adding 40 on-street parking spots in Downtown Overland Park.
Chip seal - Overland Park
will chip seal 142 lane
miles of residential streets.
Work begins in June and concludes in November.
Metcalf, from 159th St. to 167th St., includes reconstruction of a county-standard two-lane road to a city designed four-lane thoroughfare with a roundabout at 167th and Metcalf. The project begins in May and is expected to wrap up in October 2019.
Sidewalk removal and replacement. Overland Park expects to replace about four miles of sidewalks that have been identified as most in need based on an annual inspection.
Quivira, from 151st St. to 159th St., construction of a two-lane thoroughfare with a median, sidewalks, trail and street lighting.
Multiple thoroughfare locations throughout the city will be resur faced.

Whirlwind: Art in Motion you have to see
What do art, nature and science have in common?
To learn about the beauty of these three components, visit the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Garden’s new Whirlwind: Art in Motion exhibit, which opens April 21.
This 18-month exhibit will run through
September 2019. It features 13 kinetic
sculptures created by 10 different artists.
Kinetic sculptures are powered by wind or solar energy, delighting visitors as they move through intricate gyrations of sight and sound.
The exhibit will officially open to the public at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21. Mayor Gerlach will welcome the
artists and their sculptures, and admission to the Arboretum will be free from 2 to 4 p.m. during the exhibit opening.
Throughout the exhibit’s tenure, the Arboretum will offer learning opportunities for children and adults in
the form of classes, guided tours, and field trips. Private tours including wine and refreshments will also be available, providing a wonderful activity for corporate and social groups. A list of activities can be found at Artsandrec-op.org/whirlwind.
