Summary
JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: Plans, develops, organizes, schedules, evaluates, and supervises the activities and operations of the Police Cadet Program and Police Intern Program. Responsible for maintaining partnerships with educational institutions, facilitating educational check-in's, training and mentoring staff on various aspects of law enforcement, and helping facilitate members through the hiring process as applicable. Develop knowledge examinations at variable intervals to measure success of individual members and Police Programs. Works closely with the Police Personnel Section and assists with recruitment activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans, develops, organizes, schedules, and supervises the activities and operations of the Police Cadet Program and Police Intern Program. Recruits and performs background investigations for applicants. Completes and authorizes payroll for the Cadets and Interns. Completes annual evaluations and recommends salary adjustments based on performance. Supervises and participates in the Police Cadet and Police Intern programs by: mentoring Police Cadets and Police Interns; coordinating with other elements within the police department to build rotating schedules throughout the entire police department; partnering with educational institutions to maintain the educational goals of the Police Cadet program; handling payment of educational invoices for Police Cadets; providing training and/or scheduling training opportunities to include the use of various police department software, report writing skills, and communication skills. Supervises Police Cadets and Police Interns, to include while on special assignments in the field. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, ordinances, guidelines, regulations, and Written Directives related to this position and area of responsibility. Assists Personnel Unit with background investigations and personnel screening for CJIS standards, to include fingerprinting applicants. Performs Personnel Unit supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the Personnel Section commander, to include being a liaison with Human Resources for worker's compensation, FMLA, and HRIS functions. The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with supervisors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals. Trains Cadets and Interns on various policy related procedures. Responds to questions and requests for information and resolves complex problems as referred by subordinate staff or other sources. The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Performs other duties as assigned.
General Qualifications
EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent which includes courses in keyboarding, general office practices, office machine operation, and business communications. College degree preferred. Must have and maintain a valid driver's license. Must successfully pass a polygraph exam and police background check prior to employment. Access to the Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS) is required, so the following CJIS requirements apply: Must be at least 18 years of age. Must have not been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor. Applicable NCIC certification required within 6 months of hire. EXPERIENCE: Three years law enforcement experience. Supervisory experience preferred. SKILLS: Attention to detail. Basic math and accounting skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Supervisory/leadership and teambuilding skills. Time management skills. Project management skills. Strong knowledge of windows-based word-processing, spreadsheet software. Management System software applications. Human relations/interpersonal skills. Problem solving skills. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to meet deadlines. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to make and receive phone calls. Hand and eye coordination adequate to input computers, calculators and other office equipment. Visual stamina and acuity adequate to review alphanumeric data and to spend a long period looking at computers. Ability to sit in an office environment for extended periods.
