JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: This is a temporary internship located in the Neighborhood Services Section of the Planning and Development Services Department. This position will provide professional staff assistance to the Neighborhood Services Supervisor on a variety of environmental programs and events. The position will help recruit and coordinate volunteers for the events. Attends Environmental Advisory Council meetings.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides staff support for the implementation of city-sponsored environmental programs and events including: Spring streamway cleanup, Neighborhood recycling events - electronics recycling and paper shredding; Recycling Extravaganza; Curbside mattress recycling; Bulky item drop off; and Multi-family glass recycling program.
Coordinates the recruitment of volunteers for the above-mentioned environmental programs and
events. Helps to manage volunteers at the events.
Attends monthly Environmental Advisory Council meetings. Provides staff assistance as needed,
including note-taking and agenda creation.
Advises and helps implement neighborhood recycling initiatives and programs.
Researches initiatives to educate the public on environmental issues, especially measures individuals
can take to help protect the environment such as mulching, composting, and participating in curbside
recycling, using the drop-off recycling center, and recycling of electronics.
Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:
Must be a graduate or enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Environmental Sciences,
Urban Planning, Sustainable Studies, Architecture or Architectural Studies, Public
Administration/Policy, Engineering, Physical Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Business
Administration, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE:
Some working experience in a professional environment is preferred.
Some working experience with event/project planning, and soliciting and managing volunteers.
SKILLS:
Good listening, strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently.
Strong computer/internet skills.
Strong technical ability to use spreadsheets, word processing, and other computer programs (proficient
with Google Suite).
Public speaking and ability to communicate in a professional manner with the public, elected officials,
professional staff, and business/community leaders.
Basic math and accounting skills.
Strong attention to detail.

Hand and eye coordination adequate to input computer.
Visual stamina and acuity adequate to review data daily and to spend long periods looking at computer
screens.
Ability to work in inclement weather.
Ability to make and receive phone calls.
Ability to travel locally.
Ability to sit and be attentive for extended periods of time.
Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
