CITY OF OVERLAND PARK - POSITION DESCRIPTION

Performs basic and some advanced tasks related to parks maintenance, improvements, and forestry. Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal, as required.
Maintains developed park sites and assists easement crews with turf maintenance. Operates tractor mower, pulled mower, and front deck mower. Removes litter and debris from sites.
Assists in maintenance of mowing equipment and tools per manuals. Installs parts, conducts daily inspection of equipment, performs scheduled preventative maintenance on equipment. Performs inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs.
Assists in maintaining turf and ornamental irrigation systems and fountains. Operates mowers, string trimmers, edgers, blowers and other hand tools.
Assists with pesticide and fertilizer applications. Applies pesticides with sprayer to flowers, trees, shrubs, turf under direct supervision.
Assists in routine facility cleaning and maintenance. Performs basic carpentry, painting and plumbing tasks.
Assists with construction projects. Assists with asphalt and concrete work.
Assists with landscaping, tree trimming, weeding, grading and other landscape duties. Plants and waters trees, shrubs, flowers.
Assists with trash removal and general clean-up of park, right-of-way sites, and shop.
Assists in general construction duties. Assists with emergency operations, including snow removal, as required.
The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with whom interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:
Basic education (general high school of three grades) or additional equivalent experience and minimum 18 years of age.
Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
Must maintain an insurable driving record.
EXPERIENCE:
Six months of experience in landscaping/horticulture, operation of mowing equipment, hand and power tools, and motorized utility vehicles or an equivalent level of experience.
SKILLS:
Manual dexterity.
Good listening skills.
Good oral communication skills.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to work under distracting conditions.
Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals and instructions.
Ability to analyze safety situation. Ability to access situation and make recommendations.
Ability to follow oral instructions.
Mechanical aptitude.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to travel and tour City facilities and parks in adverse conditions.
Ability to traverse rough terrain.
Ability to operate power and hand tools.
Exposure to chemical liquids, powders and fumes.
Ability to operate City vehicles and equipment.
Exposure to vehicle fumes and noise.
Exposure to extreme environmental conditions.
