JOB SUMMARY STATEMENT: Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the planting and maintenance of flowers, shrubs and trees; or general grounds maintenance,turf maintenance and lake maintenance; or construction, maintenance, and repair of parks and recreation facilities.. Assists with special events Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal and storm cleanup as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General
Maintains equipment and tools in proper working order. Inspects, repairs, lubricates and cleans equipment. Follows proper storage, maintenance and use techniques according to City policies and appropriate equipment manuals.
Assists with training and supervision of temporary parks maintenance personnel. Oversees fieldwork operations; demonstrates correct techniques and procedures; and provides input to supervisor regarding performance.
Assists other work crews with ground maintenance, construction and landscaping work.
Creates work orders, tracks time, equipment and supplies utilizing productivity software.
Assists in emergency operations, including snow removal as required.
Performs the duties of Senior Park Attendant in his/her absence.
Forestry/Horticulture
Maintains flower,, ground cover and shrubs beds. Prepares beds, plants flowers and shrubs, checks for weeds, disease and insects and treats as necessary, waters and removes vegetation and trash as necessary.
Maintains, prunes, and removes trees along streets and in park areas in accordance with City ordinances. Uses and operates various equipment including bucket truck, grapple truck, chipper, chainsaws, loaders, and dump trucks.
Plants and maintains trees in City parks and right-of-ways. Drives and operates forestry equipment, rakes, applies mulch, trims, waters, stakes, etc.
Performs assigned duties as requested such as cleaning park and right-of-way of trash and debris, sweeping and cleaning shop area, assists with special events.
Responds to emergency call outs for storm clean up and tree debris removal.
Keeps abreast of current methods, techniques and procedures covering park maintenance including arboriculture, landscaping, horticulture, chemical applications, and mechanical repairs and trouble shooting through professional publications, workshops, and seminars.
Turf/Grounds Maintenance
Performs various turf management tasks at parks, athletic fields and traffic islands. operates various types of equipment such as string line trimmers and mowers; including riding, walk behind and push mowers. Loads, unloads and transports mowers.
Picks up and disposes of trash in and around parks and traffic islands. Lifts trash barrels and dumps contents in truck. Drives and operates trash truck.
Assists with setup and cleanup of special events such as July 4th Fireworks, Fall Festival and other special events.
Operates tractors for seeding, fertilizing and aerating turf areas. Connects seeding, fertilizing and aerating equipment to tractor.Seeds and fertilizes turf areas utilizing walk-behind spreader or ride on spreader. Calibrates equipment to recommended application rates.
Applies pesticides utilizing appropriate sprayer or spreader to turf areas. Sprays in accordance with proper safety procedures and weather conditions. Read and follows MSDS information and product labeling.
Performs landscaping, tree trimming, weeding, grading, and other landscaping duties. Plants and waters trees, shrubs and flowers.
Construction
Assists with or performs maintenance, repair and construction of park facilities to include plumbing, electrical, patching asphalt and concrete, painting, welding, sign construction and repairing playground equipment.
Operates and assists operators of various machines and equipment, such as loaders, tractors and attachments, back hoe, dump trucks, excavators, mowers, trenchers, boom mowers, single axle truck, and trailers.
Performs skilled trades in grade staking; measuring, forming, placing and finishing concrete; grading, backfilling, roofing, carpentry, painting, plumbing, trenching, and equipment operation.
The employee must work the days and hours necessary to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks. Must be available (especially during regular business hours or shifts) to communicate with subordinates, supervisors, customers, vendors and any other persons or organization with which interaction is required to accomplish work and employer goals.
The employee must be punctual and timely in meeting all requirements of performance, including, but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines; beginning and ending assignments on time; and scheduled work breaks, where applicable.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION & SPECIAL LICENSE(S)/CERTIFICATIONS:
Basic education or additional equivalent experience.
Requires a valid class A or B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement.
Must maintain an insurable driving record.
Employees hired or promoted on/after January 1, 2012, must have a valid class A commercial driver's license with tanker and air brake endorsements.
Employees hired or promoted on/after January 1, 2012 that work in Turf/Grounds Maintenance or Forestry/Horticulture are required to have a pesticide applicators license in category 3A or 3B.
EXPERIENCE:
One year of experience as a Park Attendant I, or one year general grounds labor and equipment operation experience, or an equivalent level of experience.
SKILLS:

Hand and eye coordination adequate to input computer and typewriter.
Exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, sprays, fogs, mists.
