Let the kids dream at free Touch-A-Truck
Kids of all ages can sit, stand and get behind the wheel of over 40 giant trucks and large vehicles at the 2019 Touch-A-Truck event at the Overland Park Convention Center, Sunday, Aug. 11, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entry is free with a minimum donation of a new, unwrapped toy or monetary gift for Toys for Tots.
Along with fire trucks, military vehicles, city vehicles, farm equipment and unusual trucks, a variety of family-friendly activities may be found at the eighth annual event, including a craft area for kids.
“Touch-A-Truck not only educates but also provides attendees the opportunity to make an impact on the community through donations to Toys for Tots, a U.S. Marine Corps Reserve program,” Brett C. Mitchell, general manager of the OPCC, said.
A traditional flag raising and salute by local Marines will take place before doors open.
Last year, the event drew over 4,500 kids. Area companies can get involved by donating a company truck for the day. To become a sponsor or to support Touch-A-Truck, please

How many times do I have to tell you?
Keep your garage door closed and cars locked.
Working around your home, whether on the lawn, in a garden or washing a car, you may leave your garage door open believing the chance to be a crime victim are essentially non-existent.
Who would suspect someone would enter your garage and steal an item while you were in the backyard or inside the house for a “few minutes?”
Believe it or not, it happens.
Most common items taken include alcohol from the fridge in garage, golf clubs, GPS devices, electronics, wallets and purses.
The latest trend involves stolen vehicles from an open garage door because the keys were left in the ignition. Further, thieves are getting into unlocked cars and using electronic garage door openers to access the property.
Little by little, you are keeping the doors closed and reducing the opportunity. Remember, keep your garage door closed and vehicles locked. Do that and you take away any opportunity for a criminal.
Overland Park police are using stealth technology to monitor general traffic data, including speed limit of vehicles, for a specific neighborhood. The three-pound unit is placed on a street light pole. The units do not collect license plate information, vehicle make or are used to issue citations. If you believe speeding is an issue on your street, visit opkansas.org/OPCares to file a traffic and speeding enforcement request.
