College Boulevard going on a ‘diet’ in 2020
On-street parking and improvement to walkability along a one-mile portion of College Boulevard is coming in 2020.
City Council members began considering a “road diet” for College Boulevard a couple of years ago following a series of public meetings with residents, businesses and others along and near the roadway as part of a College and Metcalf Corridor study.
Accessibility and parking were two of the topics brought up by meeting participants. Other concerns include land use, zoning and economic development; hospitality and amenities; culture and identity; building design; and events and activities.
Earlier this fall, the Overland Park City Council heard from staff members about plans to reduce College Boulevard one lane in each direction from Metcalf east to Nall. This recommendation stemmed from the corridor study and is supported by a detailed traffic study.
College Boulevard was widened to six lanes in the 1980s. At Nall east to State Line and Pflumm west to K-7, College Boulevard is a total of four lanes, two in each direction, and generally located in other adjacent cities.
The most recent traffic counts for College Boulevard, east of Metcalf, shows 17,000 vehicles per day.
Possible development along College Boulevard may increase to about 21,000 vehicles per day in the future, As a result, the street would stay well within its traffic capacity, even with one fewer lane in each direction.
Prior to this proposal to reduce lanes, plans were already underway to apply a new surface and roadway traffic markings in 2020 to this section of College Boulevard. About 100 on-street parking spots will be added and the speed limit will drop from 45 mph to 40 mph from Metcalf east to Nall.
