Training & Highlights
The Emergency Services Section is responsible for the maintenance of its specialized equipment. To transport that equipment, requires heavy equipment such as the EOD Truck, the BEAR (Ballistically Engineered Armored Rescue Vehicle- SWAT Truck), two Dive Team boats and an equipment trailer, and a heavy duty truck to pull the trailers. ESS also maintains the CDI (civil disturbance incident) equipment and trailers.
Special Weapons & Tactics Team (SWAT) completed over 300 hours of training. This training included high risk warrant service, barricade operations, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, active shooter, and specialized range training. The SWAT Team also includes the Precision Rifle Operators (PRO’s) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT). The PRO’s trained over 100 hours and CNT trained for 40 hours. The SWAT Team was activated 21 times in 2017 that included warrant and barricade operations, and dignitary protection operations.
The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (Bomb Squad) team completed 72 hours of training with the Kansas-Missouri Bomb tech Working Group. During 2017, the EOD Team was activated 31 times including bomb sweeps for dignitary protection operations, suspicious packages, and KU football and basketball games.
The Dive Team participated in 96 hours of training. The team was activated eight times. Those activations included evidence recoveries, and flooding response.
