OVERLAND PARK’S INTO ECOLOGY
Fall 2017
Recycling Extravaganza: recycle, shred, donate and go
Since 2011, Overland Park’s Recycling Extravaganza has collected over a million pounds of electronics, shredded the equivalent of nearly 10,000 cases of copy paper, found new homes for hundreds of bicycles, diverted tons of building materials from the landfill and helped thousands of residents clean out their garages and basements.
In October the Recycling Extravaganza will allow you to drop off and recycle many items not collected by routine recycling such, as:
Electronics – computers, TVs, printers, stereos, cables, keyboards, etc.
Confidential documents – onsite shredding to protect your security
Cell phones – answer the call to recycle your old phone
Musical instruments – help school bands and orchestras strike the
right note (no pianos, organs or drums)
Building materials – Usable project leftovers or remodel removals
Pet supplies – make tails wag with leashes, food, blankets, etc.
Mattresses – box springs, too
Fabrics and notions – let unused fabrics find a new home
Furniture – usable furnishings in good condition
Eyeglasses – old glasses, sunglasses and readers can help others see
Clothing – recycle your old clothes because those new outfits look great on you
Toys – let them bring smiles to a child
Bicycles – rusted chains and flat tires welcome
The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, on the campus of
Black & Veatch Headquarters, 11401 Lamar. Visit the city website at
www.opkansas.org/recycling for more information.
The 2017 bulky item collection has been changed to help resolve past issues while still providing you an opportunity to say goodbye to many items not collected by your regular weekly trash pickup. The program provides service to one-half of the city each year using Antioch Road as the dividing line. Households east of Antioch Road are eligible this year for the service, which occurs during September and October. Last year, households west of Antioch received the service. A flier with more information and dates will be mailed to households in the collection areas.
Key things to remember for this year include:
Up to five bulky items per household
Boxed and bagged materials will not be collected
Fencing, decking, and lumber will not be collected at curbside
A drop-off location will be available where those in the collection area can take a pickup load of fencing, decking, lumber or construction and demolition wastes on the assigned date of collection.
The Recycling Extravaganza will be held Sat., Oct. 14, where many items can be recycled.
Residences to the west of Antioch are currently scheduled for collection in 2018.
