National Night Out
The Overland Park Community Policing Section along with Community Planning and the Johnson County branch of the NAACP sponsor two National Night Out Events at two city parks. This event takes place on the first Tuesday of August each year. We have had upwards of 300 kids and adults attend this event. This event encourages neighbors to get out and meet each other and build those necessary relationships in our community. Additionally we attend individual neighborhood parties we refer as safety socials normally about (25) per year throughout the year many in the fall usually around October.
Police Explorer Post
The Overland Park Police Explorer Post #2986 consists of 35 active members. The participants meet (2) times per month. The students range from 14-20 years of age. Officers of the department serve as Explorer Advisors and teach Law Enforcement techniques to the students. In June, we sponsor an Explorer Challenge and invite other Explorer groups to compete. The competition involves the culmination of the training they have received all year long. Some Explorers are also invited to attend a statewide Explorer Challenge hosted by the Topeka Police Department.
