Bulky item pickup coming to half of city
Overland Park’s annual “bulky item pickup” is scheduled for four weekends beginning Sept. 30 through Oct. 28.
This year’s collections, which will haul away items such as furniture, appliances and mattresses from single through four-plex households with curbside trash service, is for residences east of Antioch. Last year’s program served residents west of Antioch as part of an annual program that alternates east and west of Antioch.
Use the online interactive map at opkansas.org/bulky to find out if you are in this year’s scheduled areas and, if so, the date of your pickup.
In order to address collection delays of the past, this year’s program has several significant changes from the 2015 program.
Four dates will serve four separate areas east of Antioch spanning a five-weekend period, allowing the contractor more time to collect items over a large area of Overland Park. The city will mail a flier and separate postcard to eligible residences in the four areas providing pickup dates and boundary information.
In addition to the new collection schedule, there is a limit on the number of items and what may be set out:
Up to five bulky items may be set out for collection Fencing, decking, lumber, and tires will not be collected Bagged, boxed, and loose materials will not be collected
Residents in the collection area may also drop off one pickup truck load of materials such as fencing, decking, lumber, construction and demolition materials, rock, or concrete debris on the same day as their scheduled collection. Details on the dropoff will be included in a program flier.
The dates for this year’s program are Sept. 30, Oct. 7, 21 and
28. Residents may begin setting out their bulky items the Friday prior to their scheduled collection and are advised to have their items at the curb no later than 7 a.m.
Without exception, the contractor will not collect wood fencing or decking; yard waste, tires, liquid or hazardous materials including motor oil, paint, flammable or explosive items; automotive batteries, engines or fuel tanks; tires; compressed gas cylinders; fertilizer, pesticides, solvents; or items that are prohibited from being received, managed or disposed of at a landfill.
Residents with hazardous waste can schedule a dropoff of their materials with Johnson County’s hazardous waste facility in Mission, Kan. To schedule an appointment visit jocogov.org/environment or call 913-715-6900.
Overland Park has budgeted up to $130,000 for this year’s program.
